Introduction<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

May \u201968 at 50<\/em> is certainly not the first conference with this\ntitle this year. But it might be\nthe only one that has Yugoslavia at 75<\/em>\nin the title as well. This begs the question, Why use, not one, but\ntwo anniversaries in the title of a conference? One is bad enough for an event\nthat has theoretical ambitions, but two? After all, an anniversary is a bizarre\nand certainly pre-theoretical mix of the evental and the conjunctural; it is\nwhat Fernand Braudel would call an event, but an event removed from us by what\nhe might call a conjuncture. In this respect, May \u201968 at 50 is neither an event\nnor a conjuncture; it is an event that happened a whole conjuncture ago. And\nYugoslavia at 75 is of course no better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\nadding Yugoslavia at 75<\/em> to May \u201968 at 50<\/em> doesn\u2019t necessarily make\nthing twice as bad. If we look back at what started in Paris in 1968 from the\nperspective of what happened in Jajce in 1943, namely the establishment of\nsocialist Yugoslavia, this at least gives us a chance to move from both the\nevental and the conjunctural and grasp the structural, the real interest of\nFernand Braudel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed,\nthe title May \u201968 at 50, Yugoslavia at 75<\/em>\nposes questions that ultimately are structural, insofar as their ultimate\nhorizon is the longue<\/em> dur\u00e9e<\/em> that goes all the way back to the\nearly modern origins of capitalism, the object of Braudel\u2019s first book. Outside\ntheory, Yugoslav socialist experiment and its defence during Yugoslav May \u201968\nbelie the commonplace that May \u201968 fought for socialism in the West and against\nsocialism in the East. And within theory, Yugoslav non-alignment and\nself-management pose a problem for the popular Braudelian account of 1968 as\nmostly a revolt against both the US and the USSR. Both these commonplaces about\nMay \u201968 are complicated by May in Yugoslavia, where the regime was criticized\nin the name of its own ideals of self-management and non-alignment. Contra<\/em> opinion-makers, Yugoslav\nprotesters did not protest against socialism as such, despite protesting in the\nso-called East; pace<\/em> Braudelians,\nthey protested against more than just the forced choice between US and the USSR\n(not least because they did not protest against socialism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond\nthese commonplaces, May \u201968 at 50,\nYugoslavia at 75<\/em> will rethink our assumptions about May \u201968 across such\ndivides as the West and the rest, politics and culture, culture and\ncounterculture, and art and critique. As such, the conference will create an\nopportunity to pose such fundamental questions as, Why was May \u201968 necessary at\nall in the country that led the Non-Aligned Movement and experimented with\nself-management as an alternative to both capitalism and state socialism?\nEstranged in this way, the fact that May \u201968 did take place even in Yugoslavia\ncan begin to have consequences for what we think about May \u201968 globally. If\nthis is so, it does indeed make sense to put May \u201968 at 50<\/em> and Yugoslavia\nat 75<\/em> together. (Jernej Habjan)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
